I wish to find production information on a 1969 cougar that only has a vin?

I only have the VIN number, the door tag was missing, and I wish to get the info for the engine code, the transmission code etc. that was originally in the car at manufacture? Does anyone know where I might find this?

  ACTUALLY IT'S WITH-IN THE VIN# . EACH NUMBER OR LETTER DETAILS MOST, IF NOT ALL THE INFORMATION YOU SEEK.  IT'S STANDARD THROUGHOUT THE INDUSTRY. ANY FORD/MERCURY DEALER SHOULD BE ABLE TO TO TELL YOU WHAT YOU WANT TO KNOW. A LIBRARY OR GOOD BOOK STORE SHOULD ALSO HAVE THAT INFORMATION IN THEIR AUTOMOTIVE SECTION. IF YOU POSTED THE VIN# ON THE NET ODDS ARE SOMEONE FAMILAR WITH THE EXACT INFORMATION BREAKDOWN WILL RESPOND.

  You'll have to check the car over and use it to figure most of it. the serial no. has the engine code.
