  1. I bet you get a lot of different answers to this one.  For the kind of crops like you are describing, I would say somewhere in East Texas (around Tyler west toward Arkansas and Louisiana).  Also the area in the Valley around Brownsville to

San Juan would be nice for vegetables and tropical fruits.

  2. my first thought would be lower rio grande valley. long growing seasons, decent soil and cheap labor.

  3. The crops you mention do best on slightly acidic soils.  If you want to grow legumes like alfalfa or beans they do better on slightly alkaline soils.  Other than that river bottom soils are usually deeper and contain more nutrients in the root zone than upland soils.

  4. You need to look at rainfall and temperature ranges as much as soil types.

I grew up in the Panhandle of Texas -- the square part that sticks up into Oklahoma.  We raised corn, wheat and hybrid sorghum (milo/maize) but we had to irrigate to make reasonable yields since the area averages 18" of rain per year.

Other place further south get more rain and have longer growing seasons so their yields may be higher without irrigation (which has become EXPENSIVE!)

  5. in texas where i live near houston some of the best soils are in river bottom areas one good are near me is out past sugar land goig towars richmond and rosenberg area the state prison system farms a lot of the area around there and they grow a number of crops for the state prison system all the soil is a good sandy clay river bottom and the only fertilizer that is requied from soil test i have taken in the area is nitrogen there are a lot of areas for sale and for lease in the area im sure that there are certain crops that the prison has to truck in from other parts of the state but they are self sufficiant in providing food for their needs throughout the state of texas
