I am a permanent employee and not a contractor-I fly home frequently and incur additional living expenses.

  1. geesh i hope not... you choose to work that far away from home and if it is your job that makes you it should be up to them to cover your expenses. it is also your choice to work for them! why is everyone always looking for the governmet to save them or give handouts and then in the same breath hate on the government and all the officials?

  3. yes; i do my own taxes so iknow alot @ it!

  5. If that's your permanent or long-term workplace, no the expenses aren't deductible.  If it's a temporary assignment, some expenses might be deductible.

Basically, on a long term or permanent job, your work area IS considered as your home for tax purposes, even if you choose to make your home somewhere else.  You might have very valid reasons for choosing to live elsewhere, but that's your personal choice, and the government and the other taxpayers aren't going to pay for that choice.

  6. Your expenses for travel between your home and your permanent place of employment are nondeductible personal expenses.

The fact that your home is 800 miles away does not qualify you for a special deduction.

  7. All your travel expenses should be tax deductible.

  8. No.  Travel from home to your normal place of work is not deductible for taxes, no matter the distance.

  9. Commute expenses are not tax deductible. If this is your permanent office location then you cannot deduct the transportation cost.

  10. If you call the IRS directly, they will give you the correct answer. I would not rely on "opinions", since this kind of stuff can really get you into a deep creek without a paddle! You can contact your local office by clicking this link, and selecting your location from the choices listed.

As a small business owner, I know that I cannot account for mileage/expenses I incur by driving from home to my primary place of business, but can account for mileage from my place of business to other work related places like to the bank for a deposit, or driving out for contract work. If I travel long distances to continuing ed classes in another state or country, that is deductible as well. I am not sure of the provisions for employees, but it would only make sense that if you have to spend money to make money, that it would be deductible. They do offer options for expenses involved in actually  relocating for a job. Again, I would get it straight from the horse's mouth. Good luck!

P.S. If you are planning to use HOPE or Lifelong learning credits for tuition you have paid and/or charitable contributions tax deductions, be sure to ask how you can itemize those items without losing the ability to get the deductions for your travel expenses, since they do not include both options on the same form, even though you may be entitled to both! This messed us up a little last year.

  11. Any business expense is tax deductible....we long form it and write off mileage every year and it's not nearly as extreme as yours.
