  1. When you were hired you would have been given an employee manual that specified the company policy regarding time off of work.

The manual will have a section that specifies how much sick time you would have accumulated in 4 months of employment, the steps to follow if you will be absent from work and what disciplinary procedures the company will take if you violate the company policy.

If you don't have the employee manual get one from the Human Resources department. You will know what to expect and will be in a better position to avoid future problems.

P.S. If this is the first time you are being referred for disciplinary procedure I wouldn't worry too much about it.

  2. You are allowed time of to find alternative care for a dependent who needs your care but it is unpaid and really in place so you can find suitable care.  Two days would be acceptable for this but it is unpaid.  If they take it out of your sick day allowance it should be paid but obviously sick days get counted against you and this can lead to a disaplinary.  It all depends though on how long you have been with the company and the number of hours you work per week though.  If you find yourself confused by it all i.e. if you go back to work and they are giving you a hard time for it you can get free advice through the citizens advice bureau or through your union at work.  I hope your son gets well soon!!
