I don't know what to expect. I'm am SPTA and have been in Resource (6 yrs.) and an oral Hearing Impaired Program (2 yrs.) This is a new program for our school and I need a heads up on what to possibly expect. (We have an MCS and Austism class so I know what kids are in those) I know the kids are low but what makes them SLD? Please help.

  1. SLD can also stand for Specific Learning Disability, so I don't know which is applicable to you.  By definition, a person must have at least an "average" (or higher) IQ in order to be classified as L.D. What determines a learning disability is a significant discrepancy beween your IQ and the standard scores on achievement tests (math/reading, etc). Typically, (approximately) a 14 point difference between any of the academic subscales & your Full Scale IQ would indicate the presence of a learning disability.

  2. SLD is a classroom for children with speech/language disorders.  It is typically a classroom for children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) or Mixed Receptive and Expressive Language Disorder.  This is usually their only disability, at least that is how the SLD classrooms are in Michigan.  Basically, it's a classroom for children with language impairment or both speech and language impairments.

You'll do fine.  Your CCC-SLP supervisor should provide you with assistance.

  3. SLP stands for Specific Learnign Disability-

things like dyslexia, dyscalcia----generally normal intelligence

  4. Sounds like learning disabled, which can be a range of disabilities.  Many LD kids have behavioral problems because of frustration in trying to learn with traditional methods.  I would think of creative ways to engage them besides lecturing, because they probably won't respond positively.  Also have a reward system--anything cheap that you can afford like gum or whatever kids will like these days.  Even gold starts or something might work, try different things.
