but I don't really know how. Basically all they need is to transfer LOADS of information and contacts from outlook express. Can any IT gurus help me out?

  1. If that is all they need, then don't network them.  Tell them to get you a USB flash drive, several GB and since they are doctors and not spending money on an IT person then they can afford it quite easily, and transfer the stuff that way.  Outlook lets you export and import so just export out to the USB flash drive and import it to the new computer.

Oh and most importantly, tell them you need at least a $100 bonus for working nights "researching" how to do this!

  2. First off are the computers already both networked? and second you want all your messages and contacts moved from one outlook to the other?

Well I'm going to assume all of the above are true.

For the messages find the folder where the messages are kept. Easiest way is Tools, Options, on the Maintenance tab there's a button labeled Store Folder and that should tell you where there saved. Share this folder over your network or copy it onto a flashdrive.

To import onto your other machine go to File, Import, Messages.... Choose Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and press Next. Select Import mail from an OE6 store directory and press Next and find the copy of the file in the previous step.

For contacts when you have your outlook window up press ctrl+shift+b (brings up your address book) then File, Export, and click on Address Book (WAB) Save this file and either copy it to a flashdrive or share the folder over your network.

To import just do File, Import, Address Book and find the file.

Hope this helps if it's confusing just ask sorry if it's all bunched up too!

  3. One choice, use a thumb drive, aka "Sneaker net".  =)  Works great for one time file transfer.

  4. Your local NHS trust will have an IT department that deal with the local GP offices. Get them to do it as they are aware of the confidential requirements that need to be met before you go and leak a bunch of peoples medical records to the local town.

  5. Why exactly are you being given tasks that you dont know what youre doing?

  6. Being that you are in a doctor's office and that you most likely have a lot of highly confidential information that you do not want to leak outside the office or lose in a transfer process you should not tackle this yourself.  From your words, you are not trained in this type of work and an error could become irreversable damage.

Secondly, if there is a desire to provide internet access and it is not properly done, you can have a security breach of major proportions.

In your case, get help from a professional networking company.
