  1. A consulting firm works directly for the government, (e.g. IBM Government Consulting, KPMG, Anderson, Booths-Allen, Price-Waterhouse, etc.).  Many retired military persons go to work for consulting firms after retirement, they are well aware of the culture and business processes.  If you have just gotten out of the military, but have not worked in the "corporate atmosphere" of the military the consulting organizations will not be attracted to you.  You need to sell yourself on your skills, IT skills being the most desired.  You need to be located in the DC area to do this.  The Fed Gov contracts out most of the IT work, and other work that they do not have the technical expertise to do in-house (they can't afford the salaries necessary to attract these skills).  You can look at all the US Fed jobs and directly apply by going to usajobs.gov   It will give you an idea of what is being sought after.  If you are lacking skills I highly urge you to go back to school.  You will find a position based on skills alone.  There are many ex military returning to the states, without skills...now is the time to return to college.  Good luck! (retired IBM exec mgr/consulting/former US FED/SES/DC/ college professor)

  2. Try KBR or Blackstone

  3. you can try www.careerlink.com or you local state employment office for a listing of govt job openings - don't know what a consulting firm would do except cost you a lot of money for nothing probably
