Is there any kind of tree like a canary date palm, but only grows to under 10 feet when mature?

  1. nothing like that.  the only palms that would probably stay under that size are Phoenix roebellini, Chamaerops humilis, and maybe Trachycarpus fortunei in the right conditions.

but none of those really look like the canary island palm.

  2. if you start out with a small canary, maybe a 3 or 7 gallon you might see it reach 10 feet because of how slow they grow.

  3. Phoenix roebellinii is very similar see:http://homepage.ntlworld.com/david.ison2...

The problem is it's very tender and will only survive in temps above freezing. Otherwise you'd have to fleece it for the winter. It's a lovely palm though as you can see. If you want a hardier palm there is always Cordyline which comes in all colours but as it's a cabbage palm it doesn't have the tropical look of Phoenix. I am trying out some of the newer palms and you may get away with Jubaea chilense but they're not that easy to get. Butia capitata is a also beauty but very wide. Try googling the word palm and you will find many websites devoted to palms, you may not find what you want but you'll have a fascinating time looking. Good luck
