  1. Here's a diagram of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt.

    It's performed by a Neurosurgeon.  It's used to relieve intracranial pressure caused by any number of conditions, e.g. Chiari malformations, etc.

    If there is a question of whether the shunt is not functioning properly, a 'shunt series' (radiographs) can be obtained to determine that the VP shunt hasn't been dislodged.
