I would like an idea for revitilizing an old vinyl tile floor. Can it be painted? Can't afford to take it up.

The old tile is white and is badly marred. It's in a kitchen in a rented building. The whole area is being re-painted. The kitchen will be sage green with white appliances. It's for our community theater group and the building is historic, built in 1858.Thanks for any ideas.

  1. painting would not work. Its best to just overlay a new linoleum rug down if the floor is fairly smooth? there not that expensive and you can do it yourself?

  2. The floor can be painted.

1 - Scrub it with commercial wax remover down to bare vinyl.

2 - Fill any gouges with floor-levelling compound

3 - Scuff it up if you see shiny spots.

4 - Paint with several layers of "porch enamel" floor paint.

After the first coat of solid, sponging on layers ofother colors, or painting a fake carpet is possible. The erratic faux stone look hides a lot of flaws, and is easier to patch.

5 - Top with a couple of layers of a clear polyurethane deck varnish.

This will last several years, and can be renewed by fresh paint.

  3. aba is 100% correct.  You could even paint it with black and white squares if you choose.
