I would like ideas on how to cut down my yard, it is 84ftx62ft?

I am thinking about tilling some of the yard,around the borders to cut down the grass area, since I hate the thought of mowing that much. Any planting ideas that will not be too much work? Any other ideas on how to cut back the grassy area?

Designate some of the areas to be a rock garden and plant some hardy plants that require little maintenance.  Then lay down some weed control fabric and cover with a decorative gravel.  This will reduce the amount of mowing you'll have to do.  Also, to reduce the amount of lawn area that must be mowed you can put in some pavers.... It's attractive to allow the grass to grow between them.  Or you can put the weed fabric under them and put gravel around them, too. I love a pretty lawn, but I also hate mowing.  These are some of the things that I'm trying to do myself.

One way that worked for me was to use a garden hose to lay out bed design in a couple areas of you lawn.Stand back from street level an look where you laid out your beds to bake sure you are placing them in a spot to add to your landscape...then from the front of your house to make sure it doesn't take away from a view from in side your house.Using a can of spray paint outline the design, then cut it out and remove the grass (use the good grass to repair bad areas in your lawn). Rake it good get out all the old stuff.Now your ready for a trip to the garden center.Be sure to add good soil to the ground when planting new plants and a little bone meal, the only fertilizer you want to use now is a water soluble.like miracle grow or the like.Add some mulch to the ground around your new plants and your ready to enjoy your new landscape job and less mowing.
