We're looking into adding an Art Therapist to our son's therapy schedule. I'd love to know what kind of things they do in a session. What do they typically focus on? How might a session look for a high functioning 7 year old with a bit of motor control issues? Oh, if you have any good links please share! Thanks in advance for your time and help!

  1. As a special education teacher, I worked with several students with autism.  I often used art as a reward in my classroom because I don't believe in rewarding children with food.  My autistic students always did flourish in a myriad of ways during free art time.  It's really amazing what your high-functioning autistic child will express through art therapy.  I don't know what an art therapist would do because I don't know the therapist or your child, but it will only be a benefit, and a way for your child to exercise a new means of expression.  Also, practicing art always exercises motor functioning.  Go for it!

  3. Hi Michelle, I don't know anything about Art Therapist. I have a son who is 30 years old,31 in October, any way  when he was about 5 or 6, I as a single mother had to find some thing for John. Well actually John found it himself ,he used to try to play his grandfather's keyboard, and  my fiddle"I was just learning how to play it". So I  stuck my big mouth and big nose into different that an  Autistic person could do and it may help at the same time.I enrolled John in Music Therapy, and into swimming,John did real well with the swimming,he is a good swimmer, it was expensive but well worth it,because John got to be around kids his age.The Music Therapy was ok ,but john had a much better time  swimming. One of the sites for Autism is dougflute@austism.con, the canada austism site.I hope that maybe I was a little help to you,and I hope that your son doses great in art therapy.I'm sorry that I go on and on and on, but I just keep praying everyday that the scienist can find a cure for Autism.Good Luck Michelle, keep the faith I belive that God has trusted us with his special people, God knows who can handle childern like my John and you and your son.If you wish you can e-mail me every once and a while and we can keep in touch.God Bless. Shirley
