You could turn it into a sump, which would require two mechanisms to force water through it.  I would strongly suggest you look around the Internet for DIY sumps ( http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/mana... ).  I would strongly recommend putting precautions in place to ensure that it doesn't flood.  Float switches (instructions found here: http://fishlesscycling.com/forum/index.p... ) would be a very good choice, and prevent the sump and tank from draining onto your floor.
