  1. In the US

Before you can qualify for the captain's seat, you will need a laundry list of  endorsements and 1500 flight hours. Getting your private can take anywhere from a few months to a year, depending on how often you can fly. The other endorsements take a bit less time, so all in all, shoot for at least a year, probably more. It will run you upwards of $80,000, and that is just to get your ratings. You will still need to earn hours.

The skills... well, you must speak and understand English. You need to be decent in math, have to have a lot of common sense, be able to read weather (which they will teach you when you get your private) and be able to cope with stress. Making big decisions on the fly also helps.

Your job... depends on what your job will be. If you like teaching, you can become an instructor and work with people who want to learn to fly. It can be frustrating and the schedule is awful, but the money is decent and it is a fun job. If you fly commercial, you will be more or less in charge of a multimillion dollar machine chock full of people (or cargo), so the tasks include keeping everything safe, being professional, being on time, all that good stuff. The dispatchers will set you up for the flight, you fly the plane, and that's the short version :)
