Question:

I would like to be a theatre teacher and move to Edinburgh, Scotland, good or bad? Welcome, unwelcome?

I've been in theatre for most of my life, and I used to think that I wanted to be on stage, but it occurred to me later that I truly wanted to teach. I'm currently getting my BAF in Directing and I'll be taking education classes, but I'm wondering if it's possible for me to still be certified as a teacher over in the UK and if it would be a horrible idea for me to move there to teach? Moving there wouldn't be for JUST teaching; I've wanted to live in Ireland or Scotland since I was little but it was reinforced when I went on a long visit over a year ago (I'm of Irish descent, but when I was over there I found I had much more to learn). And I plan on making a year long trip to Europe in a few years (god willing).

But again, I'm wondering if it would be a bad idea to want to teach over there. Would I be unwelcomed, unwanted, or seen by students and peers as unfit to be teaching there? Would I need to get a different degree or would I need to attend a university over there to get proper training?

I understand that there's a lot more to moving from the States to the UK and what not, but before I start to severely pursue this goal I just want to know if it is even worth pursuing? It's entirely a dream I would love to accomplish.

  1. The Scottish are great people. The Irish are s****. racists. But you must avoid UK and Ireland unless if you can stand the litter. These countries are a rich slum. I don't think that people who drop litter in the streets and have no respect for the enviroment have the education to appreciate your job. Check out other countries Switzerland, Sweeden...

  2. Here's a link to the The professional regulatory body for teachers in Scotland where you can find out if the qualifications you have at present are relevant to a teaching post in Scotland.

You may wish to contact the National Academic Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) to determine the academic level of your qualifications in comparison with UK qualifications.

At least try and find out if it's possible, if you don't do anything about it, it will always just be a dream.

  3. Go for it. Edinburgh is a very creative and cosmopolitan city. It also happens to be home to one of the world's largest arts festivals every year. It would be a great place to be for somebody with your skills. You would love living there. The Scottish people are incredibly friendly and they enjoy welcoming people from all over. :-)

  4. You got the gumption. You can do it. Not many jobs in Theatre across here. But you will find a similar job with like-minded people. I would suggest Scotland is a wee bit more tolerant than Ireland.

  5. I'm sure as long as you have the appropriate level of training you will be very welcome to teach in Scotland.

Anyone who wants to teach in a Scottish school has to be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland.  Check out their website at http://www.gtcs.org.uk/Home/home.asp especially the section on registering to teach in Scotland.

    Good luck!
