What exactly does a zoologist do, I have looked online but the results I got were confusing and contradicted each other. Any information would be helpful...

ALSO What can I do to help my chances of becoming a vet, as I know it is very competitive...I am good at science and I regularly work at a stables, also am trying to get work experience at a vet's. Do you know any good animal books? How can I help my chances at getting into either of these careers?

  1. Zoologists usually study and do research with animals. Zoologists might specialize in ecology of animals and examine predator/prey or competition relationships.  They might specialize in anatomy and physiology or reproductive biology.  They might also specialize in genetics of populations.  To get a good idea of the kinds of research zoologists do, you should look at a sample issue (on-line) of the Journal of Zoology:  http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/journ...

Getting into vet school is very competitive.  Almost everyone gets rejected the first time, so you should plan for that.  The best thing you can do to prepare for either career is work really hard in biology and chemistry.  You might want to think about getting a jump start and take some classes next summer at a local community college.

Also, while you're in college, volunteer to help any professors or graduate students with any kind of research you can.  Getting experience with data collection and analysis is essential and they can provide you with good references.

  2. I did zoology at university, and got in by having taken exams in biology, chemistry, things like that.  The best thing to do is get as much work experience as possible, I work as a park ranger and got the job not only because I had a relevant degree, but because I had did volunteer work. Its extremely difficult to become a vet, few of my fellow students went into vet after their zoology degree, but need to pay for everything themselves. Check out the zoology webpage for Glasgow University, that gives you ideas and information.Dont rule out doing research once you have your degree, or a vet nurse, park ranger! or anything else, its best to get good qualifications and give yourself plenty of options!
