  1. Hi!

Your first step is to find a reliable program! If you are in the U.S., make SURE the program is CSIET listed (www.csiet.org). That will give you at least some government oversight (as an aside, Two Worlds United is NOT and it has a very bad reputation). You should also check with your school counselor for a recommendation. Reliable programs tend to be AFS, Aspect, Rotary and YFU, with Rotary the most competitive (btw: an Interact club is not necessary to apply with them).

Here's a great place to look for lots of info on the experience: http://www.exchangestudentworld.com/

Good luck! It's a fantastic experience!

  2. Studying abroad is a very enriching experience. I have lived and studied in 3 different countries myself. Google "Studying abroad" or "Student exchange programs" and you will get a lot of links.

The biggest problem about studying abroad is the cost. Trips can cost thousands of dollars. Most programs have scholarships or ways where you can get sponsors. They might even advise you on bake sales or other methods to raise money. Remember to do research before you go. If you are a teenager, it is best to go with a respectable organization that will enforce curfews and other rules because it is most likely that they will have a representative to help you in the country.

If studying abroad is not an option for you, you can always host a student at your home. It would be the next best thing.

To be honest I have never been on a program before. I know this information only through my own curiousity and interest. I moved around with my family because of my father's job and I definitely had an easier time adjusting because of that.

  3. There's many programs our there.

Best bet is to talk to your Student Services or Class Guidance Counselor

People to People is a great one.

And your school might already have an exchange program in place swapping with schools from other countries.

There are a few programs. I would recommend either Intrax or Youth For Understanding (YFU).  What exactly are you looking for though? Because if you want to go for either a semester or year of highschool, then I would recommend those programs but if you only want to go for the summer then you should try www.goabbeyroad.com/

    Hope I helped. :)

  5. Rotary International sponsors foreign exchange students.

It is safe because you will be placed with a host family that is a respected member of Rotary International.

You will have to approach your local Rotary club about this and they will have to sponsor you.

Just do a search on "myCity rotary club" and you will probably find some contact information.

They have open meetings, often at local restaurants, and I know they will welcome you as a guest.  They will probably even buy you dinner.

Check with your school to see if you have an Interact Club which is the secondary school version of Rotary International.

    It is a great organization.
