  1. A demo and resume is the norm. In the old days they used to say "Send T&R" meaning send a tape and resume.

The contact person for this is usually the program directoer, or, in some cases, the operations manager. You might want to call the station(s0 you're interested in to get the name, if you don't already know it.

It's a jungle out there and tough to break in..persistence is the secret.

  2. It's VERY tough and VERY competitive!!  It's also an industry that's currently changing every day.  But if you want it badly enough, stick with it!  It's an industry where passion is key!

Yes, you'd contact a Program Director (or an Operations Manager, as the other person answered), but they aren't going to just put you on the air without experience.... and unfortunately, many don't always respond to resumes and demos/airchecks they receive, so keep on them!  Don't be annoying, but be persistent.

Your best bet for getting into the biz is to get an internship.  They generally are non-paid, but it's the BEST way to learn and get your foot in the door!  You meet people (Program Directors!!!) and you'll learn the behind the scenes goings-on at a radio station.

Find out who the Promotion/Marketing Directors are at your local radio stations and contact them.  They are generally the ones who hire interns... and this is a GREAT time of year to do it!  Radio stations are super busy in the summer, so you'll have a lot to do and learn!  Go to websites for the stations in your market and I'll bet there's already intern information on there!

    Good luck!   :o)
