  1. check the classifieds you will never fail there or check this site call www.cariblot.com.

  2. you could check our Yahoo Sosua group we have many realtors in our links.  Many of our members have bought homes over the years and can offer some good advice.  Above all be careful,  use a realtor and lawyer with good references, many pirates never left the Catibbean.

  4. Rent.  It's easier to leave when you want, and way cheaper in the long run.

  6. I lived there for about a year and I've gotten a lot of advice on this topic from other people who've lived there.

First. Try living there for at least six months before you commit to buying a house and living there forever.  There will be some things you will miss and some things you find out about that you have to get use to.

Second.  Get advice from other expatriots.  Most live in either condos that they rent or own.  There are many advantages to living in a condo.  You get your pool taken care of and there is security.  If you live in a house without security the chances are very good you will get robbed sooner or later. Also if the generator or water system breaks down, it's someone else's problem.  Generators are a must for any living situation and back up batteries are nice too.

Get a good lawyer.  There are many scams down there where a Dominican shows you a title and it looks like you're buying a house. But then four months later some German guy shows up and he has the real deed.

The North Coast has a ton of Expatriots, especially Sosua.  Caberete has a transient ex-pat community but it has its points.  If you like mountains and waterfalls, then look into Jarabacoa.

There are some very good certified real estate companies down there. It's worth the 6% commision, believe me.

I lived in a condo for $400/month all included including satellite TV and hot water.  I spent about $20 a day for all my meals, transportation and drinks. It's not a bad lifestyle for $1000/month.  If I didn't eat out all the time I could of gotten by on  a lot less.

Learn some Spanish.  Everything is cheaper when the locals know you're at least making an effort to know them.

Here is one of the certified agencies. The agents are almost all either German or Canadian.

    Good luck.
