  1. you could try and different forumla for him. it just may be the one you are using that he isnt taking too.

Being 4 months, you can start on cereal for him now as well if you wish. teaspoon mixed with forumla in the morning, and a night

  2. I had to supplement with formula from 4 months on as my baby had some health issues. Initially, she refused formula, but we moved on to trying different types and eventually found that she would take Enfamil. She likes it warm and we gave it to her with a slow flow nipple.

Your baby grabbing at your food is because he's becoming aware if what you're doing... all babies grab everything and try to put it in their mouths. Wait a couple of months and then introduce him to solids of his very own!

  3. What's the reason you want to do this?  Just curious because it is best to solely breastfeed through 6 months, and now they even say 1year.  Babies are smart.  They generally will choose breastmilk over formula, that's why you are having a problem.  That should tell you maybe it's best NOT to introduce formula.

  4. Is there any reason you have to be supplementing?  If not, I wouldn't bother . It's best for baby to be exclusively breastfed for at least 6 months, if at all possible.

If you really want/need to introduce a bottle, just in case of emergency, I would put pumped milk into it.  (And always have someone else offer the bottle. Babies aren't stupid, and if they know the breast is available, they will often refuse the bottle. But starting a baby on formula 'just in case there is some emergency where I might have to give formula doesn't make a lot of sense.)

It's good that he's excited about solids, but I'd still hold off on those too for a couple of months.  When he IS old enough (around 6 months), you can try offering some soft table foods and see how he does. If he does well, you can just skip babyfood entirely.
