I would like to connect with Blacks living in Argentina currently, preferrably Buenos Aires or Santiago?

I am looking to move to Argentina within the next 2-5 years and I am doing research. I have read information that sounds like the Blacks in Argentina are in a racial equality struggle such as we in North America experienced in the 1960's. I was very disappointed to read this information and would like direct information from Blacks living in Argentina, native or Blacks which have relocated there!

To the answer below, you must add a relevant fact. In 1813 salvery ("libertad de vientres" or womb freedom) was abolished in Argentina and included on the Constitution of 1853.

But what you will NOT find on your every day history book is What happened with all the slaves (******/black)?

* Brasil ONLY, using the River Plate/Argentina/Uruguay "imported" more than 500.000 black slaves from Africa!

Where are they? Yes, some flight to Uruguay, the lucky ones. The rest" DEAD! Killed, as they were of NO use to the society of that time, and had NO rights whatsoever, they were exterminated.

The 1813 "freedom!!!" gave them NO rights to own or do anything at all.

The Catholic Church, partner in the slave trade with the Portuguese and Spanish crowns, was seeing their "income" diminishing from the slave traders "taxes". Therefore look the other way when the killings occur.

If you want to know a little bit more, you can obtain a copy of the movie "The Mission" (with Robert de Nito and Jeremy Irons/1986) that will show you about the slave trade "locally/regionally" in the border between Brasil and Argentina. No blacks but the handling was exactly the same.

And yes, to see blacks, as descendants of african slaves, you have to visit Uruguay and the of course Brasil. Remember Portugal handled about 12Million salves during their best years (Angola/Mozambique/Cabo Verde/Guinea Bisau)

I lived in Buenos Aires for a year.  Typically the only blacks seen in Buenos Aires are tourists or Brazilian businessmen.  

Where did you read that information?  I feel the Argentinians have generalizations like any other population, but equating it to the U.S. in the 60's seems a little over the top to me.

Hi, I'm an Argentinean living in the US. I've lived in Argentina for 19 years until I moved here 3 years ago and I cannot remember ever seeing an black person who was Argentinean, as everyone else says, the only black people you see are American tourists or Brazileans. I happened to run into two black guys at a club in Argie and everybody would just stare at them and take pictures with them not disrespectfuly, but in awe.

I don't think there's any discrimination though, just get ready to be stared at a lot and to have people a bit uncomfortable as they're not used to seeing people like you.

You should just go on vacation to see if you like it there! You will have a great time partying and see how you feel with us weird Argies :)

I´m not black, but I want to help you to understand what is like here, to begin there are not many black people,  when you see a black person what you think first is that is a tourist!. I´ lived here all my life  and I don't feel there is a racial struggle. Buenos Aires is cosmopolitan but not many black people.I hope this will help you, but a think that an answer from an American living here will be more "reliable"cause can compare the two places!. anyway I hope you will came

There aren't hardly any blacks in Argentina.  Rarely do you ever see one.  

THere used to be a ton of blacks in the 1800's but after slavery ended they all started dissapearing.

Causes for the dissapearence include:

-Migrated to Uruguay

-Dies of Diseases (Yellow Fever)

-Died in War

-Mixed in with the white population.

Most of the blacks that you do see are either Brazilian or American tourists or basketball players.
