I would like to cross from Europe to any destination in the Americas. I have little sailing experience and I am seeking to gain experience in sailing long distances, as I have always had the desire to own an ocean going sail boat-and I am at a point in life where, financially this is possible. But I prefer to "try it" before I "buy it", hence my desire to do a trans-Atlantic crossing. I'm told there are message boards and web sites for this, but in searching, I have only found a couple of sites and the crews they are seeking are primarily for sailing in the Caribbean. Any information would be a great help!

  1. Check the classifieds in sailing magazines such as "Cruising World" and "Sail"  There are several others also.  I used to read these and would notice often someone needing a crewmember on a transatlantic sail also the converse, someone wanting to crew.

  2. If your looking for the experience there is nothing wrong with the Caribbean. It will give you plenty of weather to get used to it the season is now so you could just catch a flight over. As a guy who has spent many days at sea get used to it on some small runs first. You don't want to scare yourself before your acclimated to the lifestyle.

    Cheers

  3. Do a search on boat delivery and delivery captains. You might be able to sign on as a crew member on a delivery.
