Question:

I would like to get a credit card?

I'm a full time college student and would like to start earning credit for later in life. I don't have any student loans that will earn credit (have a full ride). My sister mentioned getting a secured card but I didn't know if that is the best way to go or not. I really don't plan on using the card other than for gas and groceries.

I can get a Navy Federal Card because of my sister being in the Navy or another one with the best plan. I'm going to talk to my family more but I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me right now?

I've recieved some things in the mail when I was a senior but I was still 17 so I couldn't get one on my own anyway. Now that I'm 18 I'd like to start building my credit up.

  1. Definitely check out the Navy one.  Read over the terms and conditions paying special attention to any fees involved.

There's also nothing wrong with a secured card.  It just means the bank is holding your money as collateral for the card.  It will build your credit and also limit your spending to the amount of the collateral you give them.

You can do your research now on a few different credit cards.  Get all the information together about fees, interest rates, grace periods, etc. then you'll have it all available when you talk to your family.

    Good luck.

  4. You're on the right track! Many people will suggest avoiding credit cards at such a young age - but if you can handle them responsibly - you'll get a head start on building your credit score. This will make it much easier to purchase a car in your name - and eventually your own home.

If you can get a credit card through Navy Federal - great! They have competitive rates and may be able to help you out. If not, you may want to consider a "credit card for limited credit" like the one's found here: http://www.wowcreditcards.com/bad-credit...

Although these offers tend to have higher interest rates (and additional fees) when compared to 'standard' credit cards, they'll allow you to build and improve your credit score over time. Eventually, with regular on-time payments, your credit score will improve and you'll be able to move on to a better offer.

Another consideration: student credit cards. These offers also include higher interest rates - but will have less fees than the offers above. If you're a college student, you should be able to qualify for one of these offers as well: http://www.wowcreditcards.com/student.ht...

    Hope this helps. GOOD LUCK!

  7. You could always get one of your parents or your sister to help you co sign for a credit card if they have good credit.

  8. I was denied on a lot of credit card applications when I was 18 because I had no credit. These were even for college students. If you have a checking and or savings at a bank or credit union, go to them first. If you have a good history with them (no overdraft balances) they will issue you a credit card. That's what they did for me, now my credit's so good I can get any card I want. Just use it responsibly, or your credit will go down the tubes real fast!

  9. I know Citibank has a credit card for college students, but I just went and applied for Capital One when I was 18.  And I got it!  I still have it after all these years.
