Well, I really want to get a pet hedgehog. I have cleared it with my parents and have costs all taken care of. I have done hours of research, but doing so came across something that states "you should check out the exotic animal law in your State." I live in Fairfax County, VA, and on their website it says "The City of Fairfax has an ordinance prohibiting exotic or wild animals." (http://www.fairfaxva.gov/animals/animals.asp) Are hedgehogs exotic animals? Is their any way I can work around this, other than moving to Alaska? I really want a hedgehog and I have been prepared for years. Is this a roadblock I can get around??

  1. You can call the city hall for a list of the prohibited animals, but a faster way is probably to call a local vet/animal hospital. They should have a list on file and will probably be easier to get on the phone.

  2. Fairfax does have a law against hedgehogs and other exotic animals at this time. There are many other people in the same position as you who are petitioning for this law to be revised, but this will probably take time.

The rest of Virginia allows pet hedgehogs, it is just your county that bans them. I'm sorry :(
