  1. A new rider should always begin with a bike that has an engine of 600cc or less. even for an experienced rider 600cc is a lot of power so be cautious. suzuki gsx-rs, kawasaki ninjas, and honda cbrs start at 600cc as the lowest engine size. If you think that is too much power you should consider an enduro, which is a dirt-bike that is street legal and then engine size is significantly smaller. or a scooter if you prefer. All manufacturers motorcycles are comparable to each other. it just depends on the style that you are looking for. when riding a motorcycle the most important part is the protective gear. don't be sparse on the money for the gear. if it better suits you needs then that is the best option.

  2. why? Are you trying to save on gasoline? If you want a good bike Id rather see you get a dirt bike ... i wouldnt want to be in mixed traffic with a bike... I like my suv... that is getting better than 40 mph... expecting over 100mpg once inexpensive technology is fully installed... oh did i mention it is under $4000.00 and can be financed?!

  3. Your first bike should be one that you will be conforable dropping, over reving, and plain old abusing.  You are not a racer and speed will come later.  Take your time to become proficient and you will have a hobby that will last a lifetime.  I have been riding over 25 years and enjoy going slow and fast.

Get a cheap bike for under 2 grand and ride it a year, then buy what you want.  Your 2 grand  bike is still worth 2 grand and then you will have both the skill and the bike you want and will be safe knowing that you have payed your dues.

Take it easy at first and any bike will give you the skill needed to have fun and stay alive.  A slow bike first will allow you to know how to shift, and maintain your speed so when you switch to a larger bike you will haul ***.  I like ninja 250's as the best first bike.  Just buy the best condition bike you can afford used as your first and you will be happy.  NO FIXER UPPERS!

  4. I don't think sportbikes are good starter bikes period... they're expensive when you drop 'em. Instead I tend to recommend standard or dual-purpose bikes for average height riders and cruisers for shorter riders.

Take an MSF course. Not only will you get some training, you'll save money on your insurance, and you'll get some ideas about the right first bike for you.
