  1. You need to the licensing office at a track and for a copy of the rules and regulations for racing.  You can also ask if the have a trainer's test study booklet (some states have these).  Study both the information in them is what is mostly on the test.  Once you feel ready you make an appointment with the track stewards.  You will take a written test in the stewards office and the stewards will ask you some questions as well.  Then you will be sent to a trainer of the stewards' choice to perform a barn test.  You must pass both the written and the barn tests to get a trainer's license.

  2. You would contact the State Racing Commission,

    http://www.state.ok.us/~ohrc/

    http://www.horseracing.louisiana.gov/abo...

    http://www.www.txrc.state.tx.us/

to get the application and find out where testing is being conducted.

To apply, you must be fingerprinted and have an FBI background check done.  Then you must pass the written test, followed by the barn test.  In most states, you must also obtain and provide proof of Workers Compensation Insurance.

There are books you can get to study for a trainers test, but that is only going to help you with the written portion.  The barn test will often require you to make and apply a spider wrap or other type of bandage.

Your best bet is to get a job as a groom with a trainer and work your way up.  It is hands on experience that will help you get licensed and become a good trainer.

[A trainers license is not breed exclusive.  If you have one, you can run QH's, TB's, APHA, ApHC, IAHA, mules, etc.]
