Question:

I would like to get started in Warhammer?

What I'd like to know is:

Can I just start collecting an Army without any sort of guidance (apart from an Army book), or do I really need all of the starter packs that seem to cost so much money?

Also, I'm 22; how easy is it to find a like-minded group of people of around my own age, rather than younger teenagers?

I'm in Bristol, UK. Thanks!

  1. No no, you don't need all the starter packs.  A good way to get into Warhammer is to have a friend that may be interested in it with you.  Games Workshop makes a "starter set" for their games that give you a rule book, terrain, and two starter armies.  What I usually do is get my friend to buy a set, and I buy a set, and then split the miniatures.  Example: In the Battle for Skull Pass starter set, they give you Goblins and Dwarves.  If you want the Dwarves and your friend wants the Gobbos, then give your friend the gobbos from your box and they can give you the dwarves from their set.  If you want to play a different army, then you can buy them one squad/regiment at a time.

If you want to jump into the game straight away, most hobby stores have "store armies" they loan to play in store.  Usually, Games Workshop recommends you buy a regiment/box of troops and then assemble and paint them.  Then you buy another and so on....

  2. Warhammer is something you start and then keep adding on to. No one I know buys a whole army at once. My son has gamed since he was 10-now 23.

Do you have any kind of gaming or hobby store by you? All in my area have gaming night. Even if they are not playing Warhammer it is a good way to met other gamers. A lot do more than one kind of gaming.

Conventions are a great way to be introduced into the game. Most gamers at conventions are adults.
