  1. For fantastic scenery, lovely people and great experiences you can't beat west Cork. I'm a Dubliner and can say that without crossing my fingers! For starters, you can fly into Cork airport - easy to use, efficient and recently modernised, quick to use. It is close to Cork city and a bus transfer is cheap. Head for the Atlantic - go via Kinsale (beautiful but often packed with tourists in summer), Schull, Bantry.

A must-do is the cable car to Dursey island - an incredible experience by Irish standards! It is breathtaking, unique and brings you to in island with a handful of inhabitants and a remoteness you would not believe. I've only been there in summer or autumn - how they survive the winter is anybody's guess. I have some photos of it on my website and my description of our self-guided tour below. The only problem about Dursey is that the Beara peninsula has poor public transport beyond the chief town, Castletownbere, so you need a car.

Have a great holiday wherever you decide,

    Peter

  2. Go to Galway on the west coast. It is lovely there. Also try West Cork. Lovely scenery. Belfast is nice, friendly people. Avoid Dublin.

  3. I took a train up to Belfast (from Dublin) and then took a bus tour of Belfast, the Antrim Coast, Bushmill's Distillery and Giant's Causeway.  It was a great day, and I would highly reccomend it.

  4. Well, I honestly don't think any trip to Ireland is complete without a trip to the west coast, and as I'm from Clare, i'd recommend you take in some of the sights there.

Some of Ireland's most famous tourist attractions are based in teh county, most notably Bunratty Castle & Folk Village - which comprises of more than 30 cottages, pubs, shops, etc recreated from last century ireland. Once in there, you can visit old Irish kitchens & help the traditionally dressed women bake bread or you can help feed pigs & cows in the farmyard. I've taken many visiting US friends there & they've all loved it.

Clare is also home to the Burren, a beautiful landscae of barren rock surface, very rare flowers and ancient pagan tomb stones, called portal dolmens.

Very near the Burren are the Ailiwee Caves, which I believe are the second largest caves in Europe. A guided walking journey through them can take over an hour. There are absolutely breathtaking!

The coast of Clare is dotted with lovely coastal villages & beaches. I often spend summers in Miltown Malbay, which boasts over 30 pubs. Clare is Ireland's most famous county for traditional irish music, song & dance and there are music schools which offer day toturials or weekend sessions for anyone interetsed. Walk into any of the pubs at night & you're sure to come upon a lively session. There are lots of nice & very reasonable B&B's in the village (http://www.nci.ie/holiday/cla/cla1.htm)....

Don't forget the famous Cliffs of Moher. They are the highest cliffs in Europe & well worth a peak at. Tourists often lie at the edge at look over.

The main town in Clare is Ennis, which has a lovely old county town feel to it. There are many craft shops and unusual boutiques there as well as some of the bigger Irish high-street stores.

Bus Eireann run bues from Dublin to Limerick hourly. From there you could get a local bus to Ennis, Bunratty & many other places. Buses also run from Dublin to Ennis. Trains go to both places also.
