Question:

I would like to go to Mexico?

Before I join the "real world," I would like to go to Mexico just once. I speak almost fluent Spanish so I know I can communicate and get good deals on things. I would like to go to Taxco and possibly to Acapulco since they are only about 2 hours apart (I think). Are there any websites out there where I can find find a family to host me in their home for a week or 2?

I am a college student on a very tight budget. I am not opposed to a youth hostel or a B&B. Any suggestions/ideas?

BTW-I am not travelling until Spring or Fall 2008.

  1. Maybe 3 hours by bus from Taxco to Acapulco, at most. I think the person who said six hours is confusing Taxco with Tlaxcala.  If you have friends in Mexico that might be an option, but it is unusual for people to just take  young foreign strangers into their homes. Now if I KNEW anyone in Taxco or Acapulco I would make a suggestion.

Unless you reallly really really like visiting silver shops where 98% have the same stuff 36 hours in Taxco is about as much as most people can take. It's not that cool of a place.

Acapulco is the filthiest beacjh I have ever seen in my life and the people there are very abusive of tourists. Go to any other beach in Mexico. There are inexpensive hotels anywhere if all you want is a place to sleep.

  2. Here's a cheap place in Mexico City:

and the Metro makes it easy to get around the city.  When you bus from city to city, talk to the ladies on the bus and tell them what you're doing--Mexicans have such big hearts one may say, "Yes, come stay with me." I wouldn't talk to the men, cause you never know.  And if that fails, remember that the cheapest hotels are almost always close to the bus station.

  3. Taxco is six hours from Acapulco. I would check with the local Chamber to see if they have any families willing to host you. You may want to look into Ixtapa or Manzanillo; I have been to Taxco and Acapulco and the people in Acapulco are not as friendly as Ixtapa or Manzanillo.

  4. try Mexico on line , very informative , hope this helps some
