Hello,

I would like to know if anyone can help me please!?

I would like to do year 11 from home because the schools here arent that great (fights, bashings, drugs, alcohol, smoking..etc..basically sh*t schools) and is a bad enviroment. I was wondering if there is any way I could do year 11 from home? If so, how? and with who? (there is a TAFE but it isnt that much better either)

Thanks in advance!!! :)

  1. Where do you live, PA has several very good Cyber Charter Schools.  Our daughter is enrolled in one and doing really well.  They provide books, computer, printer, copier, scanner combo, and reimburse for High Speed Internet service.  The best part is, since charter schools are considered part of the public school system, you pay nothing.  Have a look.

Maybe they have some where you live.

  2. Each state in Australia has its own laws and regulations; some are fairly easy to work with, while others have some of the most restrictive laws I've seen outside of Germany.

Here's a page of info on homeschooling in NSW; I think this should do a lot to get you started.  http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/par...  There seems to be some good stuff on there - it seems to be fairly user friendly.

    Hope that helps!

  3. Talk to your head teacher and teachers or why dont you move schools, Y11 is important so i can see why u wan to be out of there but incase you cant leave TRY REALLY HARD To concentrate!!!

    Good Luck!

  4. Heh Ashie...I'm 15 and a lifelong homeschooler, we're in Australia too but not in NSW.

If you want to do Year 11 at home, you really have two choices: home-education or distance education.

Home education means you get copies of the syllabii of the subjects you're doing for HSC, find (and pay for) all your own books, resources etc and effectively teach yourself. You also have to have your parents on-side if you want to go with homeschooling because they would need to be willing to handle all the legal stuff, paperwork etc. You'd also have to organise (and pay for) your own exams and someone to mark any coursework that is part of your HSC courses.

Distance Education, on the other hand, is where you enrol in an outside school (either private or public) and they provide you with your books, all the materials you need to get your HSC, teachers who you can contact for help and support, help arranging your exams etc etc.

Basically distance education is pretty much the same as going to school but you study independently at home and then mail your schoolwork (either via email or the post) into your school for them to mark and correct for you. They'll also do all the paperwork nfor you whereas, as a homeschooler, you and your parents have to do all that for yourselves.

Legal requirements for homeschooling in NSW are governed by the Education Act (1990), (s5): 'allowing (sic) children to be educated at home'. The Act gives primary responsibility for the education of children to the parents of the child (s4(b).

Often regulations about homeschooling seem tough in theory though, but, in practice, are interpreted very generally and no home educator should have any trouble fitting their education philosophy into any Aussie state's requirements (just gotta remember this is Australia we're talking about here!! LOL!!).

In NSW, homeschoolers are supposed to register (that's what the law says anyway!) but last thing we heard around the traps was that they reckon 75% of homeschoolers in NSW are not registered (almost as good as the NT where it is reckoned that there are at least 10 times more unregistered homeschooling families than registered despite the law saying all homeschoolers are supposed to register!)

Anyway you (or rather your parents) can get information about registering you as a homeschooler (if that's the way you decide to go) from the Office of the Board of Studies (OBoS) (ph 02 9367 8395). They'd need to get an application form (to be completed by your parent). After that, an 'Authorised Person' will contact your parents and arrange to interview them in order to establish that they have educational objectives for you and the resources to ensure that these objectives are carried out. Your parents are then registered to homeschool you for a period of between three months and two years. When that period runs out, they'd have to re-register if you hadn't done your HSC by then.

The OBoS have an information package all about homeschool registration @ http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/man...

There's also heaps more about homeschooling in NSW @ http://www.hea.asn.au/resources/results_...

Alternatively, you could simply enroll in Distance Education. You don't say whereabouts you are in NSW but the following NSW schools are among those who I know will let you enroll with them in order to study at home:

    1) Camden Haven High School

    Ph: 02 6556 8200

    2) Karabar High School

    Ph: 02 6298 4300

    3) Open High School

    4) Sydney Distance Education High School

    Ph: 02 9383 0200

    5) Walgett Community College High School

    Ph: 02 6828 1902

    6) All K-12 Distance Education Centres

    7) Distance Education Support Unit

    Phone: 9988 0677

    8) Dubbo School of Distance Education

    Ph: 02 6813 0100

    9) Cobar DE Campus

    Ph: 02 6836 1120

    10) Sir Eric Woodward Memorial School

    Ph: 02 9449 6003

    11) Southern Cross K-12 School

    Ph: 02 6686 9112

  5. Talk with your parents and contact your district's board of education to ask about home schooling law where you are. There are many options for home school, but you need to research it where you live because the laws and programs vary depending on location. If you tell me where you are, I might be able to help point you in the right direction.
