I live in Phoenix, AZ so I don't have lack of solar energy. I hope someone out there can send me in the right direction.

Thank you,

  1. You can't, according to many global warming scientists the sun has no affect on the temperature, and it is only C02 that causes warming, so you must use carbon dioxide to warm your home.

  2. Active solar involves panels or tanks to harness the sun's power; but you want no cost so passive solar is the way to go.

Essentially, at times that it's cooler (night, winter, etc.), you want to open all of the shades on windows that get a lot of sun and face something that holds warmth well, like a cement floor or brick wall. That item will passively absorb the sun's rays and slowly release the heat after the sun goes down, cutting back your nightly heating bills.

Looking a little more active? There are some systems that can help you warm water through solar power so you use sun-heated water instead of water from your water heating tank. Those systems, usually placed on the roof, do have an initial investment likely higher than you're seeking.
