142857 is a cyclic number - its digits always appear in the

same order but will rotate around when multiplied by any number from

1 to 6:

142857 x 1 = 142857

142857 x 2 = 285714

142857 x 3 = 428571

142857 x 4 = 571428

142857 x 5 = 714285

142857 x 6 = 857142

Pretty cool, huh? Now multiply 142857 by 7.

  1. love it... lol. it amazes me how people find this out - geius ... im not a  genius so i dnt no ne more sorryl

  2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclic_numb...

    142857x7= 9999999

  3. if you check the reciprocals of the integers from 1 onwards, apart from the exact and trivial e.g 1/2, 1/4, 1/5, 1/10 etc

then for 1/7 there are 6 infinitely recurring numbers in the decimal expansion of the reciprocal of 7

1/11 is 0.0909090909.....  which has 2 recurring numbers in the decimal expansion

    1/13 is  0.076923076923076923... with 6 recurring numbers

1/17 has 16 recurring numbers and is

    0.05882352941176470588235294117647.......

    and 1/19 is 0.052631578947368421052631578947368421.....

maybe you could check out more numbers in this way

    incidentally

    1/27 = 0.037037037...

    and 1/37= 0.027027027....

    and 27 x 37= 999

    and 1/999= 0.001001001001......

    also 1/9= 0.11111111....

    and 1/11= 0.090909...

    and 9 x 11 =99

    and 1/99= 0.010101.....

taking 13 as an example, multiply the reciprocal of 13 by each of the numbers from 2 to 12 and see what set of numbers recur in the decimal expansion.

  4. thats cool!!! there will be more due to probabilty ,it'll have some sort of rule to it . but i can tbe aresed working it out lol   good q tho.

  5. No there are other cyclic numbers like:

    588235294117647

    52631578947368421

    434782608695652173913

    344827586206896551724137931

    21276595744680851063829787234042553191...

  6. i dont think there arent much cylic numbers

    nice trick though...

    wow 999999

    and now i love it...

  7. Pretty good, especially when you multiply by 7.

What do you get when you divide 1 by 7?.......Now there's a surprise!

  8. Bilky A pretty much answered your question. Or should i say wikipedia? lols

  9. Yes - unless you allow 0 as a leading number - which most people won't ;).
