I am putting together a train table for my 3 yr olds birthday, to house all of his thomas the tank engine pieces. The train tables in the stores are 130-400 dollars and i dont see the point in spending a small fortune for something that will be juice stained and abused in a few months. I found an extra big coffee table that i can put storage underneath, and im using the velcro playmat as the scene. The table has raised edges, and i thought maybe a piece of plexiglass cut to fit the table would be a good idea to put over the play may so it stays flat and the table is easy to clean. If anyone has any input on how to do this or where to find what i need at let me know! my boys birthday is next weekend!

  1. You can get the plexi-glass from your local hardware store.  They may even cut it to the dimensions you want, ask them. This sounds like a great project

    Good luck

  2. What a great idea!

I loved Thomas the Tank as a youngster

I also had one of those tables

we just recently got rid of it

the glass on top is a wonderful idea, it'll keep the table safe and clean for years to come

your son's going to love it! what an easy way to save a small fortune!

    best of luck to you!

  3. another earth friendly option would be do go on craigslist or freecycle to get a used traintable, so you could spend more time with your son and less on the project, but the project does sound fun and he would be happy you did it for him

these sites are good for train pieces as well
