  1. l always bought the package of yeast at a grocery store but theres no other alternative to yeast as far as l can tell you

  2. Baking powder or baking soda i would think................

  3. No but you can make your own starter for sourdough if you just don't like packaged yeast. There are recipes galore on the internet for starters.

Nothing rises bread except some form of yeast. Baking powder is fine for quick breads but not for actual bread.

  4. Self raising flour can be a quick fix yeast alternative, but for bread required for a long shelf life it has to be yeast.

    Cheese Damper

    2 cups self raising flour

    1 cup milk

2 cups grated cheese (reserving 1/2 cup for top)

    1 tsp salt.

    Mix all together

    With floured hands

    Form into a ball

    Place on foil lined tray

    Slightly flatten a little

    Top with remaining cheese

    Bake 180c for 20-25 mins.

  5. I am not sure there is an alternative to commercially produced yeast.

You can make your own yeast by fermenting potatoes with sugar, but this is a highly fragile and very undependable product.

You can make a sour dough starter. It works fine if you bake almost every day.

Baking powder and baking soda will not sustain a good quality bread product.
