My russian tortoise is great!! I pay attention to him a lot and he loves to be in and outside...well, it seems anyway, but we were just thinking if he would be happier with another turtle in his cage with him...??? or do they care?

  1. Tortoises are NOT social creatures. The only time they go looking for company in nature is during breeding season. Unless you plan on breeding russian tortoises (which if you have any questions about how to take care of eggs or hatchlings, you shouldn't plan on it) you should NOT get a "friend" for it, it's a good way to spark up territoriality and raise the stress level.

    NO

    No

    No

    NO!!!

  2. tortoises will live quite happily on their own but i like to keep mine in twos, if you want to get another on you need to remember that you will need twice the space you have now, you also need to make sure what s*x your tortoise is as you can't keep two males together, male tortoises are very Territorial and two in an enclosure together will fight often it is too the death  so you cna keep two females together or a male and female, best of luck with your decission honey

  3. Another Russian Tortoise would probably make yours very happy. I recommend you take your tortoise to the vet to have him/her sexed. Having another toroise of the opposite s*x is better. Two males will fight when mature. To us, tortoise fights may not look like much, but to the tortoise they are dangerous. If one tortoise flips the other over onto it's back, the flipped one can die.

I have 3 male tortoises (Sulcatas) so I speak from experience.  They got along great for the first 4 years, then they started to fight frequently. I now have them separated.

  4. I bet he'd appreciate some good ol company :)
