I would like to know name of a fish that I used to eat in mumbai. In marathi its called modaka or patrya.?

Its a small , little shorter than palm size and white in color. Mostly eaten along with its bones as they are soft. Its a very tasty fish but I do not know if its available in san diego.

sounds like it could be close to smelt, possibly a anchovy.
