I understand how torrents work. I keep hearing of people getting caught. Technically in laymans terms, how does a person get caught, and how common is this?

  1. comparing users to those caught, possibly less than 1%. that doesn't mean YOU won't be caught. are you a gambler ?

  2. technically, in layman's terms, a person gets caught because it is an 'open' technology - in my bittorrent client (bitcomet) i can see the ip addresses of every single person sharing/uploading/downloading the file(s) in that torrent.

an ip address along with a time and a date is enough to pin a specific person and their internet connection to the sharing of of the file(s) in that torrent, and the mpaa and riaa DO monitor filesharing - it's the digital equivalent of shooting fish in a barrel.

  3. Torrents aren't as bad as P2P networks (like Limewire), but there still is a fair chance you might get caught
