  2. This is a very intense and lengthy topic.  First off let's go scientific:

Haematomania, Maematodipsia, Haematophila, and Haematophagia are all recognized diseases which some attribute to the mythology of vampires.

Now vampires are an ancient story and there are so many variables to each.  Some stole body parts (Egyptians), some drank blood (eastern Europe), some take souls or life forces (Far East), some were men who practiced dark magic and taken by the forces (North American).  It is one of the most prevalent and shared myths of all time.

One of the oldest is the myth of Lilith from the Hebrews.  Lilith was the Adam's first wife but was cast from Eden, and thus not cursed by the fall so does not know death, but instead enjoys a meal of young children as her rage against mankind.

To understand more about vampires, the ones who are brought about after death are called Revenants.  Those that become so through life can be noted through signs at birth like being born in a caul or being born feet first.

    Some real life "vampires":

    Gilles de Rais (1440)

    Erzsebet Bathory (1560-1614)

    Arnold Paole (1731)

    Peter Plogowitz (1725).

I hope this helps, it's the best i can do in such a small space.

  3. There have been vampire myths and stories for thousands of years and in most every culture. What's fascinating is that the stories between cultures were very similar, although at the time, these societies had no contact with each other. The major differences were related most often to their physical appearances. On the whole, the role of the vampire was to take: your blood, your soul, your essence, your energy. That was pretty much the idea across all cultures.

  4. The first vampire in literature was a poem by Lord Byron ( I think) He wrote it when Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein. They were friends.
