  1. To mate and make baby dragonflies

  2. perpetuate genes.. like any organism..

but they do eat mosquitos and other pest insect if that's any solice to you..

  3. Well, they're hunters, actually - they eat mosquitoes, horseflies, spiders... basically most insects, and some of the larger ones eat small birds or reptiles! They help get rid of insects that hurt or bother us (much like spiders.)

  4. Well all dragonflies are predators, both adults and larvae.

The larvae preys on mosquito larvae, as well as other aquatic creatures.  By feeding on the mosquito larvae, they help keep the population of mosquitos in check.

The adults also help keep the mosquito population in check by preying on the adults as well as other pests, such as gnats, and flies.

As prey,  they are food source for many predators, including other dragonflies, spiders, large predatory insects, such as preying mantises, lizards, frogs, birds, and predatory mammals.
