I am an American who has lived here in Mexico City for the last 15 years.  It is indeed all of what the other people here have written, but I would like to add a little bit more...

The city is not unlike many other large cities throughout the world.  There are nice areas and ugly areas.  There are beautiful parks and there are slums.  

The good thing is that you have lots of choices.  You can eat, shop or do most anything you want.  Lots of choices.

And probably most importantly, the people in Mexico are warm and generous.  They are what make the difficult traffic days tolerable.

Mexico City may never be a tourist destination, but it is indeed an exciting place to live...

My experience is that it is no longer smoggy...I live in Mexico and visited Mexico City a few weeks ago.  My friends have had same experience there.  however much of the city is dirty and smelly and ugly.  It is ENORMOUS.  There are beautful areas too...it is larger than some countries...there are more people in greater M.C. than in Australia..so there is a great variety of  types of places in the city.  There are MILLIONS of cars...you would NEVER want to drive there.  The taxi drivers are totally crazy, but they get you where you are going with great skill.  You find yourself rooting for YOUR taxi driver!
