  1. you're going to hate me for saying this...but hey....

there are only two kinds of cookware in the world: cast iron and copper.  everything else is MARKETING.  given your "not too expensive" comment, I vote for cast iron.  go to any large sporting goods store and you'll be amazed at the low price.

you MUST let it "season"!  don't wash it or it will rust.  i know, sounds weird.  read up on cast iron seasoning on the net.

  2. I go for stainless steel. It has to be heavy made. I have had my set for 5 or 6 years now. You also need at least one with teflon coating for foods that like to stick. (eggs, dairy products) Love it

  3. T-Fal is a good brand that is in the middle of the price range.  If you buy the pieces individually, it can be expensive, but you can buy a set (2 skillets--one big, one small; 2 sauce pans--one big, one small; and a 5qt pot all with lids for about $150 (Target and Costco should have these).  Anyway, they look good, and they are known for their ability to evenly distribute heat...and they don't stick.

  4. Anything that is "Hard Anodized" I bought mine from Wal-Mart, the whole set was under $100.00. Calphalon is a good name but it will run you about $200-300 depending on what set you get.

You cannot heat with it over medium heat - but you don't have to (I use the medium heat as my high heat)

You must season them first also.

You don't need to add sprays or oils when cooking.

You cannot put them in the dishwasher.

All the direction are in the box that it comes in.

  5. If your just a casual everyday cook for your family type of person a whole cast iron or copper set is not the best. In my experience a whole set of cookware is often useless. It's better to build the ste yourself. You might buy a small cheap non stick pan that you just use for eggs and need a fry pan that isn't non stick. If you buy a whole set of one kind of cookware you might find that you need different pieces as you cook and some of the different sizes that come in cookware you may never use. Buy yourself a couple nice items and add as you go and buy cheaper for stuff that dosen't matter as much such a large pot for cooking pasta in etc.

  6. Shop Walmart ,Target or if your budget allows Bed, Bath & Beyond.  Look for a pan that is heavy.  BBB's staff is so knowledgeable.
