Geez, what a bunch of goody-two-shoes (and no-nothings) most of the other answerers are.

CAO, Punch, Ashton, Perdomo and the like are good places to start.  If you're just starting, I'd look at either buying them singly (rather than a whole box) or some of the variety packs offered by a lot of online shops.  It's nice to find a local shop so you can see and smell them beforehand, but there's often better deals at the online shops.

the most affordable proper cigars are Upmans, Punch, Macanudo, Don Lino. you will have to go to a proper tabaconists to get them.
