I know it was a federal law signed by President Bush back in 2000 or 2001, could any of you explain it to me in a way that I can understand. I am studying for my teaching certification for foreign languages and I feel I need to know what this law is and how will it affect me as a Spanish teacher. How does this law affect school teachers? How does NCLB affect the execptional students? Students with special needs?

  1. It means that the more intelligent students are held back until the slower students can catch up!  Our grandson in Maine is very smart but couldn't move on until the slower learners catch up.  This ended up with him being bored stiff in school and getting in trouble for talking and fidgeting in class.  He hated school!  Once he was moved to an advanced class with more challenge for him, his behavior issues were resolved as well.  I don't think the NCLB program is necessarily a good thing.  It's a nice concept but not realistic.  There has to be a way to teach each child according to their abilities.  But, the only way to do that is to hire and pay teachers what they are worth.  The slower learners should be in regular classes, the faster learners should be in advanced classes and the real slow learners should be in special ed.  (but that would be damaging to his/her self esteem so lets just hold ALL the students back).

I know....lets take the outrageous salaries that celebrities and athelets make and give it to our teachers, they are the ones shaping our future by teaching our future.  They have a tough tough job and should be compensated for what they have to deal with.

Good luck to you, I admire teachers these days because I couldn't do it myself.  There are too many bad parents having children.  The parents DON'T discipline them and the teachers CAN'T so many kids these days are out of control.  And, they are the ones who will be taking care of us one day?  God Bless the good parents out there, I wish there were more of you.

  2. NCLB is something that is in need of change.  As a teacher it affects you greatly as you will be teaching to a test instead of teaching an array of material.  It also afftects you through the AYP scores, which are set to an un-godly rate.  After 2-3 years of your school missing AYP, you could be out of a job as the school will be taken over and restructured.  Another aspect of your job that you will experience is the loss of good/great students to other schools.  With the missing of AYP, parents can utilize school choice and pull their students from your school to send them elsewhere.  It is also possible that your pay rate will be tied to the student scores and not your teaching ability.  Think of it this way, you could be the best brain surgeon but if the hospital has too many dying patients (not your fault), you won't get paid based on your ability as a brain surgeon.

You should do some research into NCLB for the school districts where you live.  All testing scores and AYP ratings are usually posted on the web.  There are also some edutation association sites you should look into.

I like the idea of accountability but it should be emphasied more where it has been lacking.  The school system where I live was doing great before NCLB.  The state as a whole had been working for a decade on implementing standarized testing.  NCLB came in a tore out 10 years of work in one fell swoop!

  3. The quality of our public schools directly affects us all as parents, as students, and as citizens. Yet too many children in America are segregated by low expectations, illiteracy, and self-doubt. In a constantly changing world that is demanding increasingly complex skills from its workforce, children are literally being left behind.

It doesnt have to be this way.

Bipartisan solutions are within our reach. If our country fails in its responsibility to educate every child, were likely to fail in many other areas. But if we succeed in educating our youth, many other successes will follow throughout our country and in the lives of our citizens.

This blueprint represents part of my agenda for education reform. Though it does not encompass every aspect of the education reforms I plan to propose, this blueprint will serve as a framework from which we can all work together Democrat, Republican, and Independent to strengthen our elementary and secondary schools. Taken together, these reforms express my deep belief in our public schools and their mission to build the mind and character of every child, from every background, in every part of America. And I am very open to working with Members of Congress who have additional ideas to meet our shared goals.

I look forward to working with Congress to ensure that no child is left behind.
