There is a reson why they make Blu-Ray players so they can play the new format .

You need a blu-ray player, but that will play standard DVDs as well.

Blu-ray discs will not play in a standard DVD player.  You will have to purchase a Blu-ray player to read them.  However, your new Blu-ray player will play the standard DVD's that you own, and will "upconvert" them making them look better on your HDTV.

i think they work for both..... not sure.... but on the special player, it will run better.

You can not play a Blu-Ray Disc on a standard DVD player. You must have  Blu-Ray Disc player in order to view a Blu-Ray. If you are looking ofr a Blu-Ray player. I would suggest a Sony or Samsung as they are dominating the market right now and the cost has fallen since last year.

Blu Rays only play on Blu Ray players.....they also do the standard discs too...
