i wish that i can teach you, but my schedule doesn't exactly allow me to coach you regularly. you can go find some books at the bookstore which teaches you chinese culture. if you have any queries though, do feel free to send me an email or add me as a contact. i'll be most happy to help (: but do remember that my knowledge is really a small fravtion of everything else. i'm not mainland chinese; i'm born in singapore. but i do have a good grasp of the english language, so i may be able to communicate with you better.

You can go to the bookstore and go to the travel guides.  That's where I purchased a few books for my daughter prior to her China trip.  You can also go to the library to find books, videos, and language instruction CD's or audio cassettees.  There is  a lot to learn about China.  You have different dialects, the main one being Mandarin Chinese.  There is also Cantonese Chinese.  I wish I could tell you the book that I found to be the most interesting, but I've misplaced it.  I will give you one pointer if you are thinking of traveling there -- always carry an umbrella.  The public toilets are not like the U.S.  They are actually in the floor with imprints to place your feet.  Therefore, you squat way down to use it.  The umbrella will be your way of having privacy.
