I have no artistic background or training, and I am in my 50's. Thanks to all.

  1. Practice, practice, practice..This is what I believe will help you to develop skill...And when you have finished a small sketch, and you don't like it KEEP IT ANYWAY!! because from this you can see what bits of your techniques you need to work on!!

Good Luck On Developing Your Skill XD x.x.

  2. okay.

When you look at something you want to sketch, you first have to visualize a lot of different shapes.  When you see a lolly pop, you see a large circle and a small rectangle for a stick.

Aside from recognizing the basic shapes, to get the contour (all the more detailed curves and bumps), start with this simple exorcize.  Set a small item in the center of your table to sketch, a piece of paper in front of you and a pencil.  Follow every curve of the item with your eyes and try to repeat the path with your hand.  After doing this a few times try it without lookng at your hand at all.  With enough practice this exorcize should help.

  3. Practice, trial & error. There are many books to teach the basics, but no one can actually teach you how to fill a blank page with something artistic. Start with something simple like a piece of fruit and just keep looking at it and trying to draw it. Analyze every detail. You can't leave anything out or it will not look the same. Good luck.
