  1. Rhys M I know your heart is in the right place but using a mannequin as a mould for a limb wouldn’t be a comfortable fit. Moulds are made from casts of the individuals remaining limb. No two stumps are alike and depending on the reason for amputation there may be bones, nerves, or scar tissue to accommodate.

malyala one I don’t know if you’re a Prosthetist or not but you may want to see if anyone in your local rehab centers is working on projects like this. There may be training seminars like that have for MAS sockets and Ossur and Otto Bock products. I have read things about using recycled plastics heated up and draped over the mould to make a socket.

My concern would be how durable the product would be. My socket is made of fiberglass but test sockets are made out of something more like plastic. I always break test sockets.

You may find this link interesting if you are interested in working with amputees in poorer communities.

  2. I think what your trying to do is very noble.

Im no engineer so i may be pointing you in the wrong direction here. But here goes. The first and most obvious thing you will need is moulds. One cheap way of getting a mould would be to use the limbs off of store manaquins. As these limbs are made of plastic they aren't going to last long if you pouring hot plastic in them. It would be best to hve two part moulds to make manufactoring easier. So take the limbs to a local foundry and im sure they will be able to help you by making the negitive moulds.

As for the plastic im guessing PET (the kind drink bottles are made from) would be the most plentiful to use. You will have to be careful when melting it down as there will prob be some noxious fumes and there is the obvious risk of burns from molten plastic. Good Luck Hope I've helped.
