I just saw her name on my grandma's obituary on the net, and was shocked to find out she is alive after 20 years

  1. You don't say whether you know where your mother used to live.

If you do, why not look up the phone book or even put a notice in a local paper in the area? I know this may seem too easy, but you wouldn't be the first to find someone in an easy way. Go back to whatever you know or knew about your Mum and work from there.

John H was right, the Salvation Army is a great place to go, but try the simple way first. Then you could also try the Red Cross... they have a similar program to help lost families reunite. You could also call talk back radio and simply ask if anyone knows XYZ, and if so could they please call the radio station  and leave a contact number.

    Good luck in your search.

  2. At one time the Salvation Army had a Department that did just that very thing.  Try contacting your local Salvation Army Office and see if they still provide that service. Best of luck to you. Just for the record my daughter found me two years ago after 30 years. So it can be done. I wasn't aware that she even existed so I wouldn't know to try to find her. She advised me it took 15 years of sporadic searching. But she finally succeeded. And we were living only 12 miles apart for the last 5 years of her search. And I worked in radio she listened to the station without knowing she was hearing her dad. So don't give up.

  3. www.zabasearch.com and www.peoplefinder.com are two sites (live person directories) that I often use.  Is mom's location mentioned in the obit??

And google often works for me.. the trick is putting the name in quotation marks "Jane Smith" California.... but that will filter out "Jane E. Smith" or other variations.
