For my daughter's 11th birthday. About 25 kids will be there.

I am in the midwest and hale bales are available but HEAVY and it would take a bunch!

  1. How about cardboard boxes AND bales of Hay...the hay would hold up the boxes so they don't tip over.

  2. Maybe bamboo poles and hessian? Basically any cheap and easy wood that can be used for poles (tomato stakes, old fence rails, old tent poles etc) and a cheap and light fabric (canvas, old linen, shade cloth). Tie the fabric to the poles and voila! Maze.

The material would be easy to store away for another party or could be reused in the garden.

    Sounds like a fun party.

    Enjoy!

  3. Have you moved recently??? Have you seen the cost of card board boxes??? And what if it rains???

I don't think there is any cheap way to do this beside hay bales that you might already own.

The primary problems are that you've got to have "walls" high enough the kids can't see over, they have to be able to withstand reasonable winds, and what if it rains.

Now what would be cool is if you had a car dealership accross the street and made a maze of cars.  Easy to move, cheap (just the cost of gas to move), and can stand up to the elements.  However, the time involved could be considerable.

Otherwise, any materials you buy to make any reasonable sized maze is going to cost some money.  The cheapest thing I can think of would be a bunch of 2x2s pounded in the ground with sheets of thin black plastic (think 3'x50' rolls) tacked to them.  It won't be very durable (especially if you get any high winds), but may last long enough.
