I am an American Citizen whose family immigrated from Italy. For various reasons, I've been recently considering trying to obtain an Italian passport as well. Is it possible to have both American and Italian Citizenship, If so how do I go about making it happen?

  1. Yes, with Italian and American it's possible to have both.

The ItaliAmerica cultural society at http://www.italiandualcitizenship.com/ will help you get your Italian passport if you qualify or if you don't want to pay them, talk to your Italian embassy. If your parents are not registered as Italian citizens, you may have to dig up some birth certificates to prove your case.

  2. It can be done because I have both us and uk passports and citizenship. Don't ask me how tho, because I was born with both lol

  3. Dual nationality isn't really an agreement. It's just the sovereign rules of individual countries. Some forbid it, others do not.

If your mother is a citizen of Italy, she simply needs to register you with the Italian consulate nearest you. If you are an adult, you might be screwed. Citizenship is automatic for the minor children of female Italian nationals (and most other countries). If you're an adult, but still a dependent you might be able to do it easily. If you're an adult and not a dependent child, you'll have to be sponsored normally which will take more time and a lot more paperwork and examinations.

I don't recall all of the rules for Italy as I noticed the information being similar to most other western European nations.
